The Proclaimers should have walked 2,000 miles. 1,000 seems a bit half-hearted

Charles C

High intensity quiz last night saw the first half finish with just four points between the 13 teams. Insania! The second half opened out a little but finished in a nail-biting three-way tie-break, together with nine teams closing within seven points of each other. Unbelievable scenes! Along the way, we learned Italy contains Europe's oldest university (Bologna); there are four track events in a decathlon; and, bears are the mammals with the best sense of smell.

The quiz wasn't without its share of controversy but I maintain that guinea fowl are around the height of a human shin, The Proclaimers were only willing to walk 1,000 miles (500 plus 500 more) not 2,000; and the kingdom portrayed in the Frozen animated film is 'Arendelle' NOT Arundel (which is a town in West Sussex)!

"Stood Up, Now We Are Here..." won the consolation sweets and the award for best score on a points per person basis. Just ahead of them, "None Of Your Quizness" earned the 2nd-from-bottom bottle of wine, proving especially good on celebrity photo identification (Ice T, Cillian Murphy and John Cena).

Both boasting a strong podium finish (and a welcome return to the Duchy Arms quiz), joint for 3rd place were: "Fiddlesticks Chickenstrips" and "French For Mushrooms", both doing well to get 3-from-3 on the tube station questions. Ahead of them by one point, joint for 2nd place: "Gnabry, Serge" and "One Or Two Arachnaphobes", both impressing the room by knowing Stoke-on-Trent was the city which voted most overwhelmingly to leave the EU. Joint for first place were: "Wagatha Quiztie", "Fishermen's Friends" and "Beer Express" - all doing particularly well to get 3-from-2 on the 'Keane - Everybody's Changing' lyrics question. They faced a tie-breaker on the height of Snowdon (3,560ft), with "Beer Express" emerging victorious.

"One Or Two Arachnaphobes" got the closest guess to my jackpot question on the fastest speed achieved on in-line skates - 124kmh!! Unflappable in facing the envelopes, they managed to pick the right one. £189 was theirs. Jackpot re-starts next week. Already over £60 up for grabs. See you there. #onlytheduchyarmshastheanswer
