It's not a Big Mac. It's a Maharaja Mac!

With the continuing uncertainty of what will happen to Britain beyond the end of March, it is nice to have a tonic of some kind on which one can rely. The quiz at the Duchy Arms every Wednesday is one such medicine. Last night saw teams wrestling with questions on wine, Denzel Washington and the autobiography of Arnold Schwarznegger ('Total Recall' - if you're asking). At the end, the consolation Smarties went to "The Men At The Bar", who were quite literally: men at the bar. Just ahead of them, getting the bottle of wine, came "The Quizlamic Extremists" who had an impressive knowledge of the Dexter TV series, while "Some of Parr" were just ahead of them (solid Airfix logo recognition). "The Chinese Champs" excelled in the movie questions, identifying my badly explained film plot faster than any other team. Then a mere handful of points separated seven of the teams. "Let's Get Quizzical" were wrongfooted by the lyrics question and didn't quite capitalise on what was the evening's strongest first-half score but can rest happy with their knowledge of Mojitos, just one ahead of them, "Fisherman's Friends" (all over the Captain America question), "Covered & Heated Garden" (whose quick Kaiser Chiefs' lyrics knowledge - and lazily chosen team name - earned them some wine gums) and "Uncle Iain" (boosted by their lucky pen in the second half, particularly for the cryptic countries questions). In 2nd place, "EFRA Forever" and "The Birthday Party" both did very well at celebrity recognition, but it was "Fake Quiz! Sad!" who won the £40 bar tab. Top quizzing. With all the furore around bacon in Big Macs, it seemed fitting for us to learn that in India the equivalent is called The Maharaja Mac. True story. "Let's Get Quizzical" won through to the jackpot envelopes but the £203 jackpot card eluded them. £251 cold. hard. cash. to be won next week in a quiz that will be sponsored by Jameson whiskey.
