Would anyone judge me for having an ibex?

Last night's quiz at the Fentiman Arms saw us learn that Brazil was the first South American country to host the Olympics (only in 2016!); Chelsea FC's mascot is called Stamford; and, Sudoku translates from the Japanese for 'single number'. Amazing stuff!

By the end of the evening, “Third Date (Don’t Hate)” – with superb Coldplay lyrics knowledge leading to an impressive score considering there were just two of them - had muscled their way out of the bottle-of-wine position but did earn the consolation Fruit Pastilles. Just ahead of them, earning the wine, the mistakenly named: “And In Last Place…”, who knew that Oxford St is the busiest shopping street in Europe (200m visitors per year!).

Just one point separated the next four teams. “Vince Cable’s Retirement Plan”, who knew Nigella Lawson had written about being a domestic goddess, were just half a point behind “Turkey Quizzlers” and “I’m Reinstalling Tinder”, who both got 3 out of 3 on the cryptic musician question and also got the Vladimir Putin anagram. (“I’m Reinstalling Tinder” winning my points-per-person award – just two people but coming 4th). Then just half a point beyond them, earning bronze, “Huawei or Another”, who knew Puma had been founded by the brother of the Adidas’ founder.

Taking silver, just half a point shy of the winners, “The Thinkers” delivered a superb quiz performance, demonstrating a range of knowledge from internet slang to Brutalist architecture. There was then some quite earnest post-quiz analysis as to where the final point could have come from. In the first place – winning the bar tab – came “The Sexy Ibex”, whose haunting drawing of what a sexy ibex might look like was just overshadowed by them knowing that an ibex is a type of goat. Great quizzing! Come and join us same time next week. I can’t promise there will an ibex there – sexy or otherwise – but there will be excellent trivia and fantastic prizes.
