Tumble outta work and stumble to the local, pour ourselves a cup of 'getting quite vocal', yawnin' and stretchin', the quiz brain comes to life. An evening of hard quizzing (so much better than hard work) saw us learn that: Mario is the older of the Super Mario Bros; a baseball bat can be no longer than 42 inches; and, lithium is the lightest metal.
Zoe and the birthday wonder troupe (known as "The Unicorns" - complete with unicorn cake and unicorn hats) just missed the bottle of wine but got the Smarties. It came down to a three-way tie-breaker for the bottle of wine. "Big Fact Hunt" guessing closest to the world's largest hole dug by humans (over 12km down!) got the prize, just beating "Salt & Peppah!", who were superb on cartoon characters, and "Tequila Mockingbird", whose unmatched prowess on a points-per-person basis (and an excellent team name) earned them the Wine Gums.
A close pack of scores continued from there, with "Fisherman's Friends" nailing the Clint Eastwood anagram, one point ahead of them, “Colossal Velocity” got 3 out of 3 for the film posters, and just beyond them, “Pass The Duchy” – who got 3 out of 3 for the cryptic tube stations. “Hucklebum, Tooting” earned silver (some fruit pastilles) and room-wide respect for getting 3 out of 3 on the ‘Dolly Parton – 9 to 5’ lyrics question, together with “The Rookies” – whose knowledge of dogs breeds was unrivaled.
Winning top spot – and the £40 bar tab – “Fake Quiz! Sad!” delivered a great performance having been careful sure to get the question about Bruce Willis’ highest-grossing film (The Sixth Sense!!). “Salt & Peppah” won through to the jackpot envelopes but won a lemon rather than the £132 (I assume) they were hoping for. Enough to drive them crazy if they let it. £185 up for grabs next week! You spend your life putting money in your wallet. No better place to do it than at the quiz, which exists because the "9-to-5" does not. #onlytheduchyarmshastheanswer
