Pub Quizzes. Why Aren’t YOU doing one?

As I whipped around the Cherry Tree bar on a quiet, slightly wet Sunday evening, I was tasked with a simple job; ask the punters whether or not they would want to take part in a pub quiz. Naturally there will always be the regulars keen and ready to take part. Then you get the one of why-notters who might only be in London for the day and fancy a bit of a Sunday night treat. But out of all of the would be potential quizzers who I encounter whilst I journey round the bar, it’s the “ahh we’d love to but we’ll probably just have a quiet one” contenders who always leave the biggest impression. The ones who sit quietly in the corner whilst a once quiet part of the bar erupts with noise and laughter as the quiz gets in full swing. The ones who constantly go “OH come on I know that one!” Whilst everybody else looks perplexed at the local name for Cornwall might actually be. It’s the ones who I just think “oh look if you’d be put your £2 just 20 minutes ago, you could be walking away with a £50 bar tab now and a much better evening than you ever intended” that I’ll always remeber; because they are the if onlys. The silent winners who walk away empty handed because they didn’t dare to think they had the knowledge to answer any of the questions right.

They sway we regret inaction far more than action and whether or not that’s equivocally true with everything; it certainly is with pub quizzes. So the next time a quiz master pops Bynum your table asks if you’d like to take part in a quiz... just think to yourself honestly - what have we got to lose? Well I can guarantee you it won’t match up to a potential free drink, a bottle of wine, a £50 bar tab or even a muster cash prize of over £100 that’s for sure!
