"So near yet so far" would have been an appropriate name for several teams

Firstly we had first-timers who set out their objective for the evening by naming themselves "2nd to Last". As it turned out this proved to be a little optimistic. You could say they were 'near' to their objective, but 'far' would probably be more accurate - they came last. Two other teams were genuinely 'so near, yet so far' as tiebreakers were required to determine the destiny of both the £40 and £20 bar voucher prizes for coming first and second last respectively. The misleadingly named "We're not usually a threat" and "Keeping a low profile" - yes Dad, I also got that look - fought over the £40 first prize with the former proving their knowledge of American geography to be slightly superior. Similarly, the "Fabulous Baker Boy and Girl" and "138 Not Out" duelled over the £20 second prize with the former likewise prevailing for the same reason. The theme of 'so near, yet so far' continued. "138 Not Out" won the opportunity to select from the Jackpot envelopes for the £150 cash prize through Richard's (rather disturbing) knowledge of cyst fluid capacity!? With a one in five chance of selecting the Jackpot envelope, Richard selected envelope number eight and in opening the card inside became visibly and vocally excited in seeing the word congratulations, only to find he had come so near, yet so far! regretfully the sentiments referred to winning a bag of crisps!! We do it all again next Wednesday 26th February; same time, same place - as always, help the Highwayman to ensure you are seated comfortably by booking your table in advance on 01442 285480.
