More than 1,100 claps per minute? A world record that deserves a round of applause!

With dry January, veganuary and our membership of the EU all now behind us, the Duchy Arms pub quiz hurtled into February with a baker’s dozen teams testing their wits against questions across the knowledge spectrum. You know how the time flies. Only yesterday was the time of our lives. Along the way, we learnt: Guinness’ marketing mascot was a toucan; melatonin is the hormone responsible for regulating sleep and Jamaica’s airport is named after James Bond author, Ian Fleming. Weaving their way to the consolation sweets went “Livin La Vino Loca”, who did well to know that what the French call ‘pain perdu’, we call ‘French toast’. Just ahead of them, earning the second-from-bottom bottle of wine, came “Destined For Victory”. Although destiny let them down a little this time they should still be proud to have the highest points-per-person score. Among the teams that followed, “Quiztopher Robin and Winnie the Clue” earned my prize-less award for the best team name, narrowly beating “Chaos II”, who had used an obscure, old Robot Wars contestant to title themselves. Have long been a fan of both these teams’ work. Taking third place, was “Quizzly Bears”, who had a reliable all-round quiz, including getting 3-from-3 on the cryptic station clues. Joint second were “Fisherman’s Friends” and “Charlie’s Mates”, with the former getting 3-from-3 on the ‘Adele – Someone Like You’ lyrics and the latter getting 3-from-3 on the movie crying scene screenshots. Out in front, by three clear points, were “Tracey Brabin’s Shoulder Fan Club”, who covered everything from the USA’s declaration of independence treaty through to knowing that Ben Stokes got in trouble for reacting to a fan saying he looked like Ed Sheeran. Unbelievable scenes. “Fisherman’s Friends” won through to the jackpot envelopes, getting the closest guess to my question on the world record for the number of claps a person could do in a minute – a gargantuan 1,103!!! However, the jackpot card eluded them and the jackpot rolled over. Nearly £250 to be won next week! You’ve got to be there though! I want nothing but the best for you. #onlytheduchyarmshastheanswer
