497 sheep shorn in 8 hours! More than one sheep a minute!

Charles C

With a £243 jackpot up for grabs last night, it would be fair to say that although the usual pub quiz conviviality was alive and well, there was also an underlying tension. A metaphorical Christoper-Nolan-esque clock-ticking as anticipation built up to the jackpot question on sheep shearing. Before we got to the cold. hard. cash, however, we learnt: 1972 was the last year someone was on the moon (Wallace & Gromit excluded); Lisa Marie Presley has been married to Nicolas Cage and Michael Jackson; and, a tennis court is nine feet wider in a doubles match than in a singles match.

Winning the consolation sweets this week, with an excellent points-per-quizzer score, were “The Wuhan Clan”. Just two points more, earning the second-from-bottom bottle of wine were “Livin La Vino Loca”, who did superbly to get both of the faces in the celebrity face combo. “Distracted By The Dog” getting just half a point too many for the wine. Perhaps the dog – the quiz’s newest competitor, called Ada – was just not quite distracting enough!

Just five points separated the top eight teams, with folk wrestling over whether “Vixen House Entrance” leading them to Vauxhall (‘Fox-hall’) in one of the cryptic tube questions was just too contrived. On the podium, however, tipping into the over-40-marks category, galloped “No Parrs” for the bronze medal. One point more were “Charlie’s Chocolate Factory” and the wince-inducingly-named “Two Pints Of Corona & A Packet Of Virus”, who both got 3-from-3 on the brand logo identification question. Just one point more, in first place, were “Hucklebum, Tooting”, who even managed to recognise the flag of The Democratic Republic of Congo.

The jackpot question on the world record number of sheep shorn in 8 hours (497!!! More than one a minute! Can you imagine?!) saw “No Parrs” earn three envelopes, having got the closest guess, “Two Pints Of Corona & A Packet Of Virus” get two, and “Just The Two Of Us” with one. What drama! In a thrilling finale as we worked through them to find the jackpot slip, serendipitously – and probably fairly – it was “No Parrs” who held the envelope with the winning notification. £243 was theirs. Unbelievable scenes. The jackpot already stands at £59 for next week. Come and win it! #onlytheduchyarmshastheanswer
